Bf 110C of Oberleutnant Wolfgang Falck, commander of I/ZG 1
Invasion of France and the Low Countries, May 1940

History:
Falck was promoted to GruppenKommandeur of I/ZG 1 after he scored his 5th victory in February, 1940. On April 9th, 1940 Falck lead his unit against Denmark, shooting down number 7 in the process, a Danish Fokker CX or Fokker D.21, depending on the source. I/ZG 1 then took up station at Aalborg to protect the German flank while German military units continued into Norway.
While stationed at Aalborg, almost nightly the pilots of ZG 1 had to listen to the drone of British bombers as they overflew Aaalborg, operating against German targets with relative impunity. Falck and several other pilots began toying with the idea of attempting to intercept these bombers. Without benefit of radar or searchlights, this was a risky proposition at best, and Falck formed a "dusk flight" to experiment with night intercept missions. Falck's unit managed to intercept several RAF bombers, but was unable to score a "kill" before they were transferred south to the Dutch frontier in May just prior to the invasion of France and the Low Countries.
I/ZG 1 flew against Dutch and Belgian targets, moving to France after the fall of Holland. Here they flew in support of the Army as it raced across France.
After the Armistice with France was signed, Falck and two of his Staffeln were withdrawn from the front lines and recalled to Germany, where Falck would establish the first nightfighter unit, NJG 1, to combat the ever increasing British raids against German targets.
Colors:
2N+GB was finished in a splinter pattern of dark greens (RLM 70 & 71) on the upper surfaces, with light blue (RLM 65) underneath. Falck retained the ladybug insignia, Staffel emblem of 2/ZG 76, even after his transfer to command of I/ZG 1. Likewise, he retained his lucky "G", even though this was against regulation (the GruppenKommandeur's aircraft was supposed to be coded 2N+AB.)
