History:
This Me 110C-4 was captured by the French at Chateauroux in 1944. Some attempts had been made by the fleeing Germans to render the aircraft useless, including cutting control cables and electrical wires and shooting up the fuselage. The French repaired the aircraft, the work being completed at the SNCAO, a French aircraft manufacturer that had been used by the Germans to manufacture aircraft for the Luftwaffe during the Occupation. The aircraft was assigned to the Groupe de Reconaissance 3/33 in February 1945. Its service record and ultimate fate are unknown.
Colors:
When it was captured, the aircraft was painted in German mixed-gray day fighter camouflage. When the aircraft was repaired at the SNCAO, it was repainted in what appears to be gray uppers and light blue lower surfaces, undoubtedly with paint from the remaining stock of German paints left behind when the Germans were forced out.
The French "cocarde" (roundel) appeared at all six points, with the vertical tail/rudder striped in the french colors, and miniature "invasion stripes" on wings and fuselage. The number "3" was assigned to this aircraft, but from the photographs it does not appear to have been painted on the airframe.
