Messerschmitt Bf 110D-1 of 1/NJG 3
Mediterranean Theater, 1941

History: I/NJG 3 was transferred to North Africa in August 1941 to counter British night bombing raids on Rommel's ports of supply, and were the first night fighters in the theater. Based at Derna, they flew mostly convoy escort and strafing missions before being recalled back to Germany at the end of October to counter the rising number of RAF Bomber Command raids against German cities.

Colors:

This Me-110D was finished in black overall, the paint having a slight gloss to it, in contrast to usual matte finish of Luftwaffe camouflage paints. This aircraft was unusual in that its tail surfaces were in day fighter colors. It is possible that this was a replacement unit. The white rear band, a theater marking for the Mediterranean area, extended only over the top of the fuselage.
