Bf 110C-1 of Staffelkapitan Wolfgang Falck, 2ZG 76
at the time of the battle of Heligoland Bight, 1939.

At the begining of the war, Wolfgang Falck was Staffelkapitan of 2/ZestorerGeschwader 76. ZestorerGeschwader (ZG) 76 saw action in Poland, with Falck racking up three air-to-air victories against the Polish. After the fall of Poland, I/ZG 76 was transferred to the area of Heligoland Bight in December of 1939. The unit was still familliarizing itself with its new patrol area on December 18 when 24 Wellington bombers of RAF Bomber Command conducted an armed reconnaissance of German Naval facilities at Wilhelmshaven. Already in the air at the time of the raid, Falck and his wingman intercepted several Wellington bombers, Falck shooting one down and a second possible. However, accurate return fire from the Wellingtons had damaged his aircraft, and with one engine out and the other failing, he glided to a nearby island where he crash-landed.

M8+GK was finished in a splinter pattern of dark greens (RLM 70 & 71) on the upper surfaces, with light blue (RLM 65) underneath. The ladybug is the Staffel emblem of 2/ZG 76. The codes were unusual in that Falck, as Staffelkapitan, should have had the codes "M8+AK". But, as he would throughout his career, he kept the "G" for luck.

On February 17, 1940, Falck officially got his fifth kill, and was soon thereafter transferred to I/ZG 1 as the new Gruppenkommandeur, taking his lucky "G" with him.

Thanks to James Grimes for permission to do repaints for his excellent Messerschmitt bf-110C Zestorer. The original model can be downloaded from: Virtual RLM for Combat Flight Simulator 2
