History:
This aircraft was one of several sent to Rumania in late 1942 to build up their night defenses in anticipation of RAF night bombing raids against targets in Rumania, especially the Ploesti oil fields. Originally formed as the 51st Night Fighter Squadron, this designation was later changed to 1st Night Fighter Squadron, though the unit was known by the Luftwaffe as 12/NJG 6 (it was subordinated to IV/NJG 6 which was stationed in Rumania.)
The 1st Night Fighter Squadron flew both day and night sorties in defense of Bucharest and Ploesti in 1943-44.
Colors:
This aircraft was finished in overall light blue-gray (RLM 76) with the upper surfaces oversprayed with medium gray (RLM 75.) The aircraft had standard Eastern Front theater markings. The original German insignia had been crudely painted out, and Rumanian national insignia applied. The aircraft retained its old German codes.
