Me-110D of Oblt Wolfgang Schenck, 1/SKG 210
Russia, Summer 1941

History:

EGr 210 had introduce the C-4/B fighter-bomber into service on the Channel coast in July of 1940. EGr 210 proved such a success that plans were made to expan the unit from a single Gruppe to a full Geschwader, and EGr 210 was re-organized and renamed SKG 210, SchnellKampfGeschwader or Fast bomber squadron 210, in April, 1941. SKG 210 briefly continued to fly missions against England, but by early June of 1941 the unit was moved to Poland in preparation for the invasion of the Soviet Union. The mission of SKG 210 was to operate in support of the advancing German Army on the march to Moscow in the summer of 1941. While some aerial victories were scored by this unit, their real successes were against ground targets, bombing and strafing airfields, tanks, trains, and other targets ahead of the German Army.

Oberleutnant Wolfgang Schenck started the war with 1/ZG 1, participating in the Polish, Danish and French campaigns. He was shot down over on May , 1940, his wounds causing him to be discharged from active duty. This was not to last, however, as faced with the siasterous losses of the August, 1940, the Luftwaffe rethought its policies, and recalled all discharged aircrew that were deemed still fit to fly.

Schenck, anticipating this, went to see his old Gruppe commander, ?? (1/ZG 1 had in the meantime become 1/EGr 210.) Together, they were able to get him reassigned to 1/EGr 210. As the disasterous losses continued, Schenck, though only a Staffelkapitan, as the airman with the most experience in battle ended up leading the entire gruppe on operations over England.

Schenck led 1/SKG 210 in the early stages of the invasion of the Soviet Union, returning to Germany in September 1941 to join the newly-formed EGr 210, responsible for introducing the Messerschmitt 210 into active service with the Luftwaffe. He would return to ZG 1 in 1942 (as SKG 210 had by then been renamed) and became GruppenKommandeur of I/ZG 1, and later Schenck would go on to form the first unit to take the Me-262A into action in the bomber role, Kommando Schenck, in August of 1944 against the Allied armies in France. Wolfgang Schenck survived the war.

This is an interpretation of how Schenck's Me 110 appeared in early September of 1941.

Colors:

This aircraft appears much darker than other 110's of this unit, and would appear to be in dark greens (RLM 70 & 71) with the division between upper surface and undersurface colors being feathered rather than a sharp division. While this lead me to believe the aircraft might be an older C-4/B, John Vasco, author of "The Sting of the Luftwaffe: Schnellkampfgeschwader 210 and Zerstörergeschwader 1 "Wespengeschwader" in World War II" assured me that in his discussions with Schenck, he was told that Schenck always flew the latest model of the Me-110, making this aircraft a "D" or "E". The "Wespe" (wasp) on the nose was the unit insignia of SKG 210 (and later ZG 1.) The aircraft carried Schenck's individual scoreboard on the tail, with 15 air-to-air victories and 5 tanks.
