Fw-190D-9 w/R4M missiles, White "1" of 5/JG 26
Spring 1945

History:

The R4M unguided air-to-air missile was introduced late in the war, seeing limited action in the April 1945. Designed in the summer of 1944, in December of that year Jagdgruppe 10 based at Redlin was given the responsibility of proving the R4M missile. The unit's Fw-190's were equipped with racks to launch the missiles, and testing proceeded through the winter of 1944-45. Great promise was shown by the new weapon, and the the weapon was then installed on a Me-262 of JG 7 in March, 1945 with good result. In the meantime, as development programs ground to a halt in the chaos of the last days of the Reich, the R4M-equipped Focke-Wulfs were released to local squadrons for the last-ditch defense of the German homeland. JG 26 received several of these aircraft, including White "1", which was presumably flown by the staffelkapitan of 5/JG 26. Service details are not known, but II/GJ 26 was ordered to fly from their bases in Germany to Lister in Norway just hours before a cease-fire was to take effect in Northern Germany on May 5th. Only a few aircraft made the flight across the Skagerrak (Danish straits) to Lister, including White "1". It was photographed in Lister, where it briefly joined JG 5 just before the surrender.

Colors:

This aircraft would appear to have been painted in late-war greens (RLM 81 Dark Green and RLM 82 Medium Green) on the upper surfaces, with some variation of RLM 76 light blue-gray undersurfaces. Tactical markings included a yellow rudder, signifying a formation leader, and the black & white "Reich Defense" fuselage bands of JG 26.
