Fw-190D-9 Red "1" of JG301, piloted by Lt. Walter Kropp
Winter 1944-45

History:

JagdGeschwader (Fighter Wing) 301 had originally been formed in 1943 to counter the growing number of Allied bombers that were appearing over the Reich. JG 301 soldiered on through the Spring of 1944, when long-ranging P-51 fighters, appearing for the first time over Germany, took a heavy toll of German forces defending the Reich, including JG 301. As 1944 passed into 1945, JG 301 continued to fight - and sustain losses. While the 8th Gruppe of JG 301 never actually converted over to the Fw-190D, the constant shifting of personnel within the unit to try and compsenate for spiraling losses resulted in mixing of aircraft between the various Staffeln (squadrons.) As best can be determined, Leutnant Walter Kropp was staffelfuhrer (squadron commander) of 8/G 301 though he was flying a Dora in the markings of 6/JG 301. This was the plane he was reportedly flying when he was shot down and KIA over Dresden on March 2, 1945.

Colors:

This Dora is in the typical late-war color scheme of dark green and medium gray upper surfaces, with light blue-gray undersurfaces. This scheme is speculative, as I've not found a clear photo of this aircraft. However, other aircraft of this unit were in similar colors and scheme. The red and yellow rear fuselage bands identified this aircraft as being from JG 301. Very late in the war colorful rear fuselage bands were authorized for a number of Luftwaffe fighter units, differing by unit, though not all units applied these markings to their aircraft.
