Fw-190D-9 Black "10" of JG 26
Spring 1945

History:

JagdGeschwader (Fighter Wing) 26 had a long and illustrious history with the Luftwaffe, serving from the beginning of World War II through the end of the war. JG 26 re-equipped with the Fw-190D-9 late in 1944, being fully re-equipped with the "Dora" by Spring of 1945. This aircraft would appear to have been originally with the third Gruppe of JG 26, but the vertical fuselage marking was painted out during its service, indicating a re-assignment within the Geschwader. This was one of 6 Fw-190D-9 aircraft captured at Flensburg in May, 1945, but while it was prepared to join the large number of German aircraft brought to the USA after the war for evaluation, it never made it, and its ultimate fate is unknown.

Colors:

This Dora would appear to be in typical colors of dark green and medium gray upper surfaces, with light blue-gray undersurfaces. Only part of the undersurface of the wings appears to be painted, the color of the upper surfaces carried around and under the leading edge of the wing, the rest left in bare metal and primer. This was instituted late in the war as a paint-saving measure. The black and white rear fuselage bands identified this aircraft as being from JG 26. Very late in the war colorful rear fuselage bands were authorized for a number of Luftwaffe fighter units, differing by unit, though not all units applied these markings to their aircraft. The vertical tail surfaces would appear to have yellow paint applied to them, possibly a washable distermper, that is thought to have indicated that the pilot was a staffel (squadron) leader.
